How do you tell a core update from something you broke yourselves?

Traffic drops. Someone in the chat says "there is an update rolling out". Half the time that is true and half the time the real cause is a deploy, a template change, or a tag that stopped firing.

What is your process for telling the two apart before you start rewriting content? Mine starts with the date: line the drop up against the deploy log first, then against announced updates, and check whether it hit one page type or everything.

I am also curious how long you wait before acting. An update that is still rolling out can look very different a week later, and plenty of "recoveries" are really just the rollout finishing.

What does your first day of diagnosis look like?
